Beyond Depths Of Despair
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul –”
A girl-child is raised in anticipation that
She grows into an accomplished damsel, worthy
of a companion, manages home, career, et al…
Fosters relationships with astounding brilliance.
Parental love reveals prejudice
against the female progeny
influenced by socialization practices –
The male heir is the savior!
With much grit and resolve
When a daughter rises past bias, she poses a threat
to the gender-biased monsters –
Assaults leave her with a battered body and bruised soul.
A distinct song in the heart, it’s her legitimate right
To live with dignity and recognition.
How much longer will it take for hope to take wings?
Be the harbinger of change in this infested society…
(The first two lines have been taken from Emily Dickinson’s poem)
