Poetry 2025 Longlist, Indrani Chowdhury

The Music of Light in Our Sky

From time immemorial,

Our lapis lazuli sky seems to be smitten,

With that music of light,

Which is believed to be hidden,

Amongst its countless twinkling stars.

This music soothes its core being,

Enlivening its milieu, its surroundings.

It seems to offer a soulful rendition of,

This journey called life,

Our maker’s finest creation,

By creating new wholes, offering new definitions.

It also breathes new life to our universe,

By breaking unjustified, archaic barriers.

The music of light cascading from those distant,

Named, unnamed burning orbs illuminate our world,

And by transmitting their soulful melody of light in our life,

Inspire humans to live with a purpose.

It seems to emphasize that there is hope,

A scope for improvement,

Even though sometimes dark forces might mitigate,

The brightness of our lines of fate,

Causing us much bereavement.

This sonorous music of light flickers our inner will,

To live a little more, to face the drill of another day,

Without much contemplating about,

The struggles that we would face.

It teaches how the solar and lunar eclipses of distress,

Should be treated as a natural occurrence,

And should be fought with,

Courage, resilience, patience, and prudence.

The ‘enlightened’ stars seem to forge a friendship amongst themselves,

Which is truly enriched with this music of light,

It is as if an unbreakable pledge is taken by them,

To always remain by each other’s side.

This musical harmony,

This song, this symphony,

Which is being played up above,

By those celestial beings,

Also immortalize the tales of our short sojourn here, in this world,

By giving meaning to our every ordinary or extraordinary actions and dreams.
