Poetry 2013 Shortlist, Sanathkumar Pasupathy

Second Chances

Some see a kite trapped in transmission cables,
Finally pay for its flight of fancy.
Its complete disregard for gravity.
Its reckless waltzing of the wind,
Soaring into no-fly zones and
Getting into dog fights.
Others see an isolationist,
A victim of self-ostracism,
Rebelling needlessly against
convention,
Intriguing only from a distance,
Asking you to harbour no dreams of closeness
So, the kite awaits a kind wind to set it free,
But  I fear I’ll see the rain tear it to shreds this monsoon.
