A Little Girl

Far from a distance, among the people in the slum, I saw a little girl sad and glum.
Even with tanned skin and a scar on face, she looked pretty and in all her grace.
There she sat cross-legged with a hand on her cheek, eyes fixed on a cat which appeared feeble and weak.
She picked it with tender care, of the world around her completely unaware.
Bringing her friend closer to heart, she assured it of all love and comfort.
As the cat gave a melancholy cry, the girl murmured words of affection and prayed for the moment to pass by.
She was cursing herself as all she could afford to give was love, which for the cat must be everything over and above.
Far from a distance, among the people in the slum, I saw a little girl sad and glum.
